Career day is an opportunity for students to explore a potential career of their choice. I've done career day previously in the Ninth Grade and the Tenth Grade, but this year is different, since we are having our Career day at the site we are interning at in the future.
To start this post off, I would like to speak about the typical day at Saddleback College. I think the typical day at the college requires a lot of coordination and logistics, as classes come and go and teachers stream in and out of their classroom. The environment is truly separate from a high school setting where the students all interact with each other - instead, I saw classes leave at seemingly disconnected times, and professors strolling in and out of the building whenever necessary for them. My mentor, the person I will be studying under for Internship, noted that even though he stays on campus most of the time, he usually does not see the same people every day, and knowing that every day he will have a new interaction is part of what he likes about his job. Because of this and the education based focus of the college, the environment seems really relaxed although professional. Students had some form of formality in regards to what they were wearing, but did not need to be guided to their class or told that their period was over, instead knowing when to move to the next class. The areas I saw for career day were mostly quiet, since students in their study halls do not speak loud. A professor called in sick while I was present, and my mentor seemed fine with it, although he made sure to tell me that absences are tolerated with prior notice and communication, and as long as they are not being abused. I don't plan on being absent since I am acting as an intern. In regards to dress code, I feel I overdressed myself. I came in a jacket since it was rainy outside, but underneath that I had a suit on. Once I looked around and saw students in jeans and t-shirts, I realized that professionalism in conduct was more towards how one deals with others as opposed to how they dress necessarily. To reflect on career day, I would say I enjoyed it a lot. There was a lot of touring, but also a lot of learning, and the students and teachers I interacted with were very friendly and happy to have me working with them. To reflect what I have learned from class that can apply to Internship, I thought of what things I could mention, and then created this shortlist of items that definitely help, although they aren't the only ones which do help. For example, in Math Class as taught by Mr. Corner, I have learned to be analytical in the way I approach potential problems. This will help a lot, especially since I am in a college setting. In all of my classes, I have learned to act as a leader, and I regularly seize the initiative when required to do so. Thus, I can also apply this to internship, where I am expected to work with a strong work ethic, or at least one equal to a college setting. Thus concludes my first blog post and reflection about Career Day, and I will be adding more to this blog as Internship progresses.
